ALBAA 'Ledge Care' Initiative

The Australian Land Based Anglers Association Inc. (ALBAA) ‘Ledge Care’ initiative has been established to allow anglers to actively share in the stewardship of their local areas. The ‘Ledge Care’ philosophy also allows groups of anglers to initiate discussion and form relationships with their relevant stakeholders thus promoting a shared responsibility and encouraging co-management principles in the areas we anglers deem to be of cultural significance.

ALBAA has established a set of protocols and packaged documentation to make this as easy as possible for those wanting to join ALBAA in spreading the ‘Ledge Care’ ideal Australia wide.

(ALBAA), volunteers, cadets and staff from the Defence Environment Team came together to celebrate 'Clean Up the World Weekend' (CUTW) at the Beecroft Weapons Range (BWR) in Jervis Bay. Catherine Hill Bay [1 March 2009]

Maintaining consistency ALBAA members Shad Baker and Mark Williams turned out to Catherine Hill Bay with low expectations after our recent events there. What they were greeted with was a welcome surprise. The area was in even better condition than it was left in after Kurt and Shad got in there a few weeks earlier!!

There’s always more to do here so Mark and Shad (with family in tow) Summer, Josh and Joel concentrated their efforts on the top of the Ledge making another substantial dent in the glass situation there. A big thank you to all involved and to those that are taking care at Catherine Hill Bay, great to see!

Munmorah State Conservation Area [1 March 2009]

ALBAA Ledge Care Co-ordinator Christian Gough took on two major sites for Clean Up Australia Day (CUAD); Snapper Point and Wybung Head. The event attracted seven members of the public who registered through the CUAD website.

Wyong City Council got in early on in the piece stating that the rocky headland areas were off limits to members of the public for this event and spent some time further defining the areas in which they would accept our operations.

Avoca [1 March 2009]

Clean Up Australia Day 2009 and South Avoca was always going to see a bit of 'Ledge Care' tender love and care. ALBAA members Christian Gough, Gavin Beveridge, Chris and Finn Grant were on site to make it happen.

The situation at Avoca was found to be much the same as it always is with the guys removing three solid Clean Up bags full of rubbish. It was impressive to note that not all of this was really fishing related and a lot of it was general litter you might expect to find at the end of a good house party. Once again plenty of bottles, food containers, newspapers, and discarded clothing (now this one is really hard to fathom, clothes are expensive!).

What was really great to see is Chris teaching the next generation of fishermen the right way from the start getting young Finn involved (who incidentally is a Marlin fisherman not a Bass fisherman, just ask him!)

Big Beecroft [1 March 2009]

Clean Up Australia Day 2009 and Big Beecroft was on the agenda. As always Steve Malby had arranged vehicular access through the National Park so we travelled up that all so familiar track but unusually this time hotly on the heels of the National Parks Ranger’s vehicle. Then there was Jims brand new four wheel drive and Damo’s much beloved Hilux taking up the rear.

After a bit of searching, picking up bits and pieces and finding the usual garbage in the usual places we each managed to fill a bag each except Damo who surpassing all others with two solid bags and a heap of other bits and pieces which truly must be the biggest bag in a ledge care event to date.

After the usual thankyou and goodbyes to the ranger, it was then back to the Park to unload and clean out the back of Damo’s Hilux which took a real hammering from some of the concoctions located within the rubbish but after a few refreshments later had us reflecting back at the successes of the weekend with a clear head and knowing we had taken yet another step in the right direction.

Eaves Ravine [1 March 2009]

While not exactly an easy place to access the Eaves Ravine has still found itself in a poor state this season. ALBAA members have, on at least three other occasions made good use of their Clean Up bags. Clean Up Australia Day was no different with ALBAA members Pat and Kurt taking the time give the area a general tidy up and remove some equipment that others may of though a little to difficult to take out.

All up one solid Clean Up bag and some assorted odds and ends removed from this stunning location.

Outer Tubes [1 March 2009]

Trying to hold a Ledge Clean Up at quite possibly the most famous piece of rock in the country during peak season is something that ALBAA member Steve Malby will be happy to tell you is a tall task. It’s one thing to find somewhere to plant a foot let alone sort out what is what and who is who.

Steve still managed to take out two Clean Up bags for his efforts and that’s after the Big B Clean Up!

Target Beach [1 March 2009]

Clean Up Australia Day weekend and the day before the actual Clean Up Australia day saw Pete and Damo with the Groper coast on their mind. Given the constraints of time a previously organised fishing trip out to the front ledges was cancelled and the troops hit the Longnose Point area. The agenda was simple, a pre dawn fish to secure some ingredients for the evening meal followed up with a Ledge Care clean up.

All went to plan with the duo managing to fill two Clean Up bags and the boys even found the fish were biting. A well earned reward given the sacrifices made leaving the normal larger quarry alone out at the front ledges to ensure the area was given the Ledge Care once over.

Catherine Hill Bay [11 January 2009]

On the 11th January 2009 ALBAA members held ‘Ledge Care’ event number three at the ledge known to members as the ‘Glass House’.

After receiving reports through the members internet forum a clean up at Catherine Hill Bay was imminent. This is a ledge that the Lower Hunter and Central Coast Teams have put a considerable amount of man hours into and the Christmas crew proved the punters were no better educated.

Outer Tubes [26 July 2008]

After a quiet weekend fishing at the iconic 'Outer Tubes' platform in Jervis bay an ALBAA member brought to the attention of all the members the issue of rubbish on the ALBAA Ledge Care internet forum and an event was scheduled post haste.

The 'Tubes' is steeped in LBG history and the maintenance of this area is always very high on the local JB team’s mind! In an effort to react as fast as possible the team made the necessary arrangements with Clean Up Australia and local management body, in this case the Navy.

Catherine Hill Bay [28 June 2008]

The focus of this action was the prominent rock ledge at the southern point of Catherine Hill Bay.

With seven bodies and plenty of bags we set about the arduous task of picking up the pieces one at a time. A safety briefing prior to clean up proved helpful to ensure that all members were equipped with gloves and asked to take care when handling their bags.

Beecroft & Lobster Bay [14 June 2008]

This Clean up event was staged with the support of Shoalhaven City Council City Council and Clean Up Australia.

Sunrise saw many that had pledged to fish that morning rise wearily from their slumbers and after a hearty camp breakfast a rejuvenated team assembled at Abrahams Bosom beach car park ready for business. Local Environmental Ranger, Rob Oake made a timely appearance to unlock the headland trail gates just before the motorcade assembled.

Avoca [31 May 2008]

As part of the Australian Land Based Anglers Association (ALBAA) commitment to the ‘Ledge Care’ initiative our Central Coast Team have been taking on the rubbish issue at South Avoca head on. Numerous Clean up events have been staged at this location over the past months and have been held with the support of Gosford City Council.

Due to ease of access and being a short drive from Sydney this Ledge sees a huge amount of fishing pressure and, unfortunately, a huge amount of litter. The Central Coast team have taken on a big task in trying to keep this ledge clean and have set the standard for local commitment within the ‘Ledge Care’ initiative.

Catherine Hill Bay [24 May 2008]

This Clean up event was staged with the support of National Parks NSW, Lake Macquarie City Council and Clean Up Australia.

At CHB, it seems, the custom involves leaving your waste on the ledge before heading back to the top of the headland to drink ones self silly. Once sufficiently lubricated, 'bottle throwing competitions' begin with maximum spread of broken glass seeming to be the desirable outcome. The Lower Hunter team took on a big ask cleaning out all the caves on the headland and attempting to make an impact on the broken glass littering the headland.

East Pt Flora and Fauna Reserve [2 March 2008]

On March 2nd 2008 the Australian Land Based Anglers Association Inc. (ALBAA) carried out its first environmental actions in conjunction with Clean Up Australia Day in Darwin, NT and Currarong, NSW.

The Darwin clean up was focussed at East Pt Flora and Fauna Reserve in Darwin, a very popular local fishing spot. The reserve is vast and the site was also cleaned on the day by the Rotary Club of Darwin, allowing us to concentrate primarily on the fishing ledges.

The NSW clean up was held at Beecroft peninsula focusing on 'Mermaids Inlet' and the 'Outer Tubes' as well as the access tracks leading to these places...
