ALBAA Clean Up Australia Day 2008 - Combined Jervis Bay / Darwin Environmental Action2 March 2008On March 2nd 2008 the Australian Land Based Anglers Association Inc. (ALBAA) carried out its first environmental actions in conjunction with Clean Up Australia Day in Darwin, NT and Currarong, NSW.
The Darwin clean up was focussed at East Pt Flora and Fauna Reserve in Darwin, a very popular local fishing spot. The reserve is vast and the site was also cleaned on the day by the Rotary Club of Darwin, allowing us to concentrate primarily on the fishing ledges. After weeks of rain the sun came out on the day and we got stuck into the job at hand. Darwin City Council had phoned during the week informing us that the lawned areas had been mowed so combined with the clean up the place looks as good as i have ever seen it. We would like to extend our thanks to Darwin City Council and the Rotary Club of Darwin for their enormous efforts, and of course to the Clean Up Australia organization for providing the platform and information to conduct things safely. The NSW clean up was held at Beecroft peninsula focusing on 'Mermaids Inlet' and the 'Outer Tubes' as well as the access tracks leading to these places. ALBAA would like to take this opportunity to formally thank those members of Shoalhaven City Council and their Evironmental Rangers who contributed to make this a straight forward exercise. A formal letter of thanks will be sent to these people in appreciation of their efforts. ALBAA would like to extend its thanks to those members who participated: Lou, Ben, India, Stu, Pete, Brenton, Spyross, Kurt, Tanja, Damon, James, Spocko, Byron, and Steve who co ordinated the event. The above events have succeeded in establishing relationships with the local management bodies and the feedback we have had has been extremely positive. ALBAA will continue its efforts and is currently investigating the implementation of further involvement with Clean Up Australia. We would also like to thank SFX and its members for their continuing support. Membership for the newly formed Association is now open, all those interested in joining please visit http://albaa.com.au and download a membership form. Australian Land Based Fishermen have a proud history of innovation, resilience and dedication; the time has come to add collective responsibility to this statement and ensure these iconic areas remain open for generations to come. |
The ALBAA ‘Ledge Care’ initiative has been established to allow fishermen to actively share in the stewardship of their local areas. The ‘Ledge Care’ philosophy also allows groups of anglers to initiate discussion and form relationships with their relevant coastal management bodies thus promoting a shared responsibility and ensuring anglers access rights are maintained.
ALBAA has established a set of protocols and packaged documentation to make this as easy as possible for those wanting to join ALBAA in spreading the ‘Ledge Care’ ideal Australia wide.

ALBAA members are currently undertaking several projects covering a varried range of topics.
The aim of these projects is to correlateing the collective wealth of knowledge ALBAA members posses in our specific area of angling and presenting this knowledge in a manner that all land-based anglers can benefit.
